About this course

Why it matters

Most strategies lose momentum somewhere between the board presentation and the weekly operating meeting. The Balanced Scorecard method closes that distance by expressing strategy as a small set of linked objectives across finance, customers, internal processes and organizational capability, each tied to a measure people can act on.

For a company the gain is consistency: every department reads the strategy the same way, builds targets from the same map and reports progress in the same language.

How it runs for your organization

An organization runs it as 30 hours of self-paced online learning on the Blue Ocean learning platform, so a cohort of managers can progress alongside their normal workload while the L&D team follows completion on the administrator dashboard.

Participants work through the method step by step, from strategy map to cascaded scorecards to review rhythms, and can apply each step to their own unit as they go. Successful completion earns a digital, verifiable MBE credential.

Who this course is for

The program suits companies that want several layers of management to plan and report against one strategy. Executives and business unit heads who own strategic objectives gain a way to express them that survives the handover to operations. Strategy and transformation staff learn to build the map and the measures behind it.

Department and operations managers see how to cascade targets without losing the thread to corporate goals, and performance management or project specialists learn to keep scorecards, dashboards and reviews running. A mixed cohort works well because the modules descend from enterprise strategy to individual measures.

Course outline

The seven modules follow the order in which a scorecard gets built in practice. The opening module makes the case for balanced measurement and positions the scorecard as a management system rather than a reporting tool. Modules two and three move from strategy statements to a strategy map with explicit cause and effect.

Module four converts each objective into measures, targets and initiatives. Module five handles alignment, cascading the scorecard across departments, teams and individuals. Module six sets up the review rhythms, dashboards and accountability that keep it in use, and the final module applies the whole method to a business scenario.

Frequently asked questions

Which teams in our organization should go through Balanced Scorecard?

It works best where strategy has to travel through several layers of management. Enroll the leaders who own strategic objectives together with the managers who will carry them into departmental targets, plus the analysts or PMO staff who maintain scorecards and dashboards. When all three groups share the same method, the review meetings that follow become far more productive.

Does the program cover strategy maps or only KPIs?

Both, in sequence. Module three is devoted to designing strategy maps and the cause and effect logic that connects objectives, and module four then moves to selecting KPIs, setting targets and choosing initiatives. The map comes first on purpose: measures chosen without one tend to track activity rather than strategy.

How does the cascading of objectives get handled?

Module five addresses alignment from three directions: cascading down from the enterprise scorecard to units and departments, cascading across to support functions, and aligning teams and individuals through personal scorecards. Participants come away with a method for giving every role a clear line of sight to the strategy it serves.

What will participants be able to do differently after completing it?

Managers who finish the program can write strategic objectives that can be tested, draw the map that links them, choose a balanced set of leading and lagging measures, set defensible targets and run review meetings where the scorecard drives the conversation. The final module has them apply the full method to a realistic business scenario.

How long does the program take alongside a full workload?

The program contains 30 hours of self-paced online content on the Blue Ocean learning platform, available on web and mobile. Because nothing is scheduled, each manager sets a pace that fits around operational demands, and the administrator dashboard lets your L&D team see progress and completion for the whole cohort without chasing individuals.

What does a participant receive on successful completion?

Each participant who completes the modules and the assessments receives a digital, verifiable MBE credential issued under the Mastering Business Excellence series by Blue Ocean Corporation. It can be shared with employers and added to a professional profile, and your organization keeps the completion record on the dashboard for capability planning.

How do individual learners register for this course?

Use the Register Now button on this page. It opens Balanced Scorecard on the Blue Ocean Academy website, where individual learners can enroll directly.

How does a corporate license for this course work?

Your organization licenses seats for a cohort or a whole team. Participants study the self-paced modules on the Blue Ocean learning platform, on web or mobile, and your administrator follows enrollment, progress and completion on a dashboard.

Can we start with a pilot cohort before a wider rollout?

Yes. A pilot cohort in one department is a practical first step. Use the corporate license form, and a program advisor will map the relevant courses and license options to your teams.

Ready to get started?

Request a corporate license to run Balanced Scorecard across your leadership team, or ask us about a pilot cohort for one business unit first.
