About this course

Why it matters

A proposal can be right and still go nowhere. Leaders who only inform leave the decision to chance; leaders who influence understand how people decide and build their case around it.

The program teaches the second: the behavioral drivers behind choices, how to structure an argument so it holds up in the executive room, how narrative carries strategy, where power sits among stakeholders, and how to hold the difficult conversation rather than avoid it. For a management team the payoff is faster alignment and fewer decisions relitigated after the meeting.

How it runs for your organization

Each participant receives 30 hours of self-paced online learning on the Blue Ocean learning platform, which the organization licenses for a cohort or an entire leadership population. The administrator dashboard gives HR and L&D a live view of enrollment, progress and completion.

Digital study resources and templates support each module, with knowledge checks and practice assessments at each stage, so a manager can rebuild a live proposal or prepare a real stakeholder conversation while studying. Those who complete the modules and assessments are issued a digital, verifiable MBE credential.

Who this course is for

The program belongs in any organization where good ideas stall for lack of sponsorship. Project managers who depend on people they do not manage are the clearest case; the modules on power mapping and influence without position speak to them. Consultants and advisers who must shape client or executive decisions sharpen the structure and story behind their recommendations.

Emerging leaders preparing for roles that carry more visibility build executive presence early. Managers and team leaders who need buy-in from peers as much as from their own teams learn to sequence influence over time. Mixing functions in a cohort reproduces the cross-departmental stakeholder situations the program is built around.

Course outline

Eight modules take a leader from being heard to being followed. The opening module defines the influence spectrum from informing to mobilizing and dissects what makes a message move people. Module two covers the behavioral foundations: two-system thinking, framing, loss aversion, anchoring and debiasing.

Modules three and four are about construction and delivery, first the architecture of a persuasive argument, then executive presence and the executive summary. Module five adds narrative as a strategic tool. Module six maps stakeholders and the five bases of power. Module seven prepares the difficult conversation, and the last module carries everything into writing, email and influence on camera.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a presentation skills course or something broader?

Broader. Presentation delivery appears in module four under executive presence, but the program starts earlier, with how decisions are actually made, and finishes later, with stakeholder mapping, difficult conversations and written influence. A leader who only polishes delivery still loses to a better-framed argument; the program works on the framing, the sequencing and the relationships as well.

How does the program treat influence that happens over email and video calls?

Module eight is devoted to it. It covers the architecture of persuasive writing, how to write email that produces a decision rather than a reply, and how presence translates to camera when the leader is not in the room. For distributed teams across the GCC, India and the UK this is where much of the influencing gets done.

What does power mapping involve, and is it political?

Module six treats power as something to read accurately rather than to play. Participants identify the stakeholders around a decision, assess the five bases of power each one holds, and follow a five-step method to build the map. The output is a clear view of who shapes the outcome and in what order to engage them, which is planning rather than politics.

Will participants learn to handle conflict, or only to persuade?

Module seven is built for the conversation a manager keeps postponing. It takes apart the anatomy of a difficult conversation, separates positions from interests, introduces the third story as a neutral starting point, and walks through preparing and opening the exchange. The persuasion modules earlier in the program make these conversations more constructive, because the leader arrives understanding how the other person decides.

Why is behavioral science included in a course about influence?

Because arguments that ignore how people decide tend to fail. Module two explains the two systems behind every decision, the behavioral drivers that shape choices, and how framing, loss aversion and anchoring alter the way an option is received. It also covers choice architecture and debiasing, so leaders use these effects to present honestly rather than to manipulate.

How is the program delivered to a leadership team spread across several countries?

Entirely online and self-paced. Every participant gets the same 30 hours of content on the Blue Ocean learning platform, on web or mobile, whichever market they sit in. One corporate license covers the cohort, and a single administrator dashboard shows enrollment, progress and completion for every location, so a regional L&D lead can run one program rather than several.

How do individual learners register for this course?

Use the Register Now button on this page. It opens From Communication → To Influence on the Blue Ocean Academy website, where individual learners can enroll directly.

How does a corporate license for this course work?

Your organization licenses seats for a cohort or a whole team. Participants study the self-paced modules on the Blue Ocean learning platform, on web or mobile, and your administrator follows enrollment, progress and completion on a dashboard.

Can we start with a pilot cohort before a wider rollout?

Yes. A pilot cohort in one department is a practical first step. Use the corporate license form, and a program advisor will map the relevant courses and license options to your teams.

Ready to get started?

Request a corporate license for your leadership team, or run a pilot cohort of project managers who must influence without formal authority.
